Your First Reflexology Session What to Expect & How to Prepare
A gentle, healing experience from the moment you walk in.
If you’re new to Reflexology, you might feel unsure about what happens during a session. Do I have to undress? Will it hurt? What will I feel? At Real Thai Massage Therapy Wellness Centre in Lethbridge, we love welcoming first-time clients and guiding them through a treatment that’s calming, restorative, and often surprisingly powerful.
Here’s everything you need to know before your first Reflexology visit with answers to the most common questions.
What Is Reflexology Again?
Reflexology is a non-invasive therapy that uses gentle pressure on specific areas of your feet (and sometimes hands or ears) that are believed to correspond to different body systems like digestion, sleep, stress, or hormonal health.
Think of it as a body tune-up through the feet, helping your nervous system calm down and your body rebalance itself.
Before Your Appointment: What to Do
Here’s how to prepare:
- Drink water: Hydration helps flush out toxins after your session.
- Avoid a heavy meal: A light snack is fine, but you’ll feel more comfortable without a full stomach.
- Wear loose-fitting pants: So we can access your lower legs and ankles easily.
- Arrive 5–10 minutes early: To fill out a quick wellness form and discuss your goals.
We’ll ask about:
- Your current health, energy levels, sleep, digestion, or any chronic concerns
- What you hope to get from the session (Relaxation? Hormone support? Energy?)
- Any areas to avoid or sensitivities you may have
During the Session: What Happens
You’ll lie comfortably on a heated table or recliner, fully clothed (just remove socks and shoes). The room will be quiet, warm, and peaceful, often with soft music.
Here’s what your therapist will do:
- Cleanse the feet with warm towels
- Use gentle, focused thumb pressure on specific reflex zones
- Check in about pressure levels and comfort
- Work both feet evenly, often starting with the toes (head & brain zones) and moving downward
Slight tenderness in one spot | That zone may reflect internal tension |
Warmth or tingling elsewhere | Circulation is increasing |
Deep calm or drowsiness | Nervous system is entering rest mode |
Emotional release | Your body is processing stored stress |
After the Session: What to Expect
Clients often report:
- Deep relaxation and calm
- Clearer breathing and thinking
- Improved sleep that same night
- Slight soreness in some foot points (temporary)
- More energy or “lightness” in the days after
We’ll provide self-care tips like:
- Drink water to help flush out toxins
- Rest if needed
- Pay attention to how your body responds over 24–48 hours
Common First-Time Questions
Does it hurt?
No – pressure is always adjusted to your comfort. Some reflex points may feel tender, but not painful.
Do I need to talk during the session?
Only if you’d like to. Some clients chat, others prefer quiet. Your choice.
How long is a session?
You can choose 60, 90, or 120 minutes. First-timers often start with 60 minutes.
Can I combine it with other treatments?
Yes! Reflexology pairs well with Thai massage, cupping, or hot stone therapy.
